ನ್ಯೂಜಿಲೆಂಡ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಸದರಾಗಿ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾಗಿರುವ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಮೂಲದ ಗೌರವ್‌ ಶರ್ಮಾ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಸಂಸತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಮಾಣ ವಚನ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಹಿಮಾಚಲ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಹಮೀರ್‌ಪುರದವರಾದ ಶರ್ಮಾ, ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಹ್ಯಾಮಿಲ್ಟನ್ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ಲೇಬರ್‌ ಪಕ್ಷದ ಅಭ್ಯರ್ಥಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಣಕ್ಕೆ ಇಳಿದು ಗೆದ್ದು ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರು ಈ ವರ್ಷದ ಚುನಾವಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ ಪಾರ್ಟಿಯ ಟಿಮ್ ಮೆಕ್‌ಇಂಡೋರನ್ನು ಮಣಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರೌಢಶಾಲಾ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಕಲಿತದ್ದಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿದ ಶರ್ಮಾ, “ಭಾರತದ ಹೊರಗೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಮಾಣ ವಚನ ಸ್ವೀಕಾರ ಮಾಡಿದ ಎರಡನೇ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ನಾನು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬಂದಿದೆ” ಎಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಆಕ್ಲೆಂಡ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂಬಿಬಿಎಸ್ ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದ ಶರ್ಮಾ ವಾಷಿಂಗ್ಟನ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂಬಿಎ ಪೂರೈಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರೀಗ ಹ್ಯಾಮಿಲ್ಟನ್‌ನ ನಾವ್ಟನ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ವೈದ್ಯ ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
Today I took my Affirmation of Allegiance to the Crown in Te Reo Māori, to acknowledge tangata whenua, and in Sanskrit, to acknowledge my Indian heritage. I have tried to learn Te Reo in the past through Unitec and learnt Sanskrit when I was in primary and middle school in India. Sanskrit is a 3500 year old language from which many of the current Indian languages have originated. I have been told today that I am only the second person ever to take Oath/Affirmation in Sanskrit outside of India. I am deeply honoured to be part of the 53rd New Zealand Parliament and look forward to serving fellow Hamiltonians as well as New Zealand over the next three years
